The Akron Zoo in Ohio is a fantastic destination for families. It offers a variety of attractions and events for children and adults. With over 2,000 animals from across the world to visit and much to explore, a day at the zoo always promises memorable experiences.

Make sure to plan ahead as there is so much to do and see! The zoo is open year-round, but peak season is from May 1st to September 2nd. During these months, the Akron Zoo is yours to explore from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There’s ample parking, and it’s free!

For Akron Zoo tickets, daily rates range from $9 to $19, and children under two are free. Or, consider an Akron Zoo Membership! Membership has great benefits, including unlimited visits all year long, discounts on special events, and reciprocal admission to other participating zoos and aquariums. Members also receive exclusive previews and discounts in the gift shop and on dining.

Explore the Day Away

Don’t miss the Conservation Carousel. Kids adore this beautifully crafted carousel, featuring 33 hand-carved and painted animals. It's a delightful ride that entertains and educates about wildlife conservation.

Another must-visit is the Komodo Kingdom, where you can get an up-close view of the Komodo dragons!  Across the park are the picturesque grounds of the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens, a beautifully landscaped area that’s perfect for a stroll or picnic.

Little minds love the Curiosity Classroom as well! This interactive space allows children to engage in educational programs and hands-on activities related to wildlife and conservation. And don’t miss the Curious Creatures exhibit, where you can discover plants and animals like the electric eel, flytraps, and the Giant Pacific octopus. Learn all about the unique adaptations these creatures have developed to hunt, hide, and move around in the world. 

And when little tummies start growling, there are plenty of dining options. Families can enjoy a variety of places for snacks, meals, and beverages at spots like the Komodo Kingdom Café, Grasslands Café, Panda Treats Food Truck, and other food carts throughout the zoo. (Planning tip: The Komodo Kingdom Café is open year-round while other options vary seasonally.) Outside food is permitted. So, if you want to bring your own lunch and snacks, picnic areas are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, or you can reserve them in advance. 

Seasonal Fun!

If you’re planning on visiting the zoo during specific seasons, consider these wonderful seasonal events.

During the annual Summer Safari, enjoy live music, entertainment, drinks, and a tasting trail. This event features a variety of local food and beverage vendors, plus keeper-led trainings and delightful meet & greets with animals throughout the zoo. It's a fantastic way to enjoy a summer evening with family and friends.

Or experience the brand-new Akron Zoo event, Wildlife Illuminated! Throughout the spring, you’ll have the opportunity to view wildlife and nature at night through illuminated paintings, sculptures, and displays. These stunning light installations highlight the beauty of the natural world and offer a new perspective on the zoo's inhabitants.

Boo at the Zoo is an annual favorite! During Halloween, the Akron Zoo transforms into a spooky yet family-friendly destination. Kids can trick-or-treat through the zoo, enjoy themed decorations, and participate in various Halloween activities. There are also costume contests, crafts, and games, making it a fun-filled evening for the whole family.

The zoo's most anticipated event, Wild Lights, illuminates the winter nights with stunning light displays from late November to the end of December. The festive atmosphere includes holiday music, warm beverages, special animal encounters, and visits with Santa Claus. Sometimes, even the Grinch shows up! Visitors can stroll through the beautifully lit pathways, marvel at the twinkling lights, and get into the holiday spirit with a variety of seasonal activities and entertainment.
