As one of Summit County’s must-visit attractions for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and families, MAPS Air Museum is home to nearly 60 different military and civilian aircraft that celebrate the legacy of aviation. Throughout the more than 13,000-square-foot museum, which has more than 9,000 square feet of hangar floor space, you’ll find aircraft on display from every critical era in aviation history. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip to MAPS Air Museum.
Discover the Legacy of Aviation
MAPS Air Museum plays an essential role in preserving military and aviation history. Their impressive aircraft collection spans the pioneer, World War I, Golden Age, World War II, post-war (Korea and Vietnam), and digital eras. Interactive exhibits such as Medal of Honor (which honors Ohioans who have received the medals), Fallen Feathers Memorial of Ohio (honoring Ohioans lost since the beginning of the War on Terror), and The Super Sabre Memorial Exhibit give visitors a unique chance to explore the interiors of select aircraft. A fourth exhibit, the Bob Hope Room, which will pay homage to the Hollywood entertainer, is also slated to open soon.
The museum has three display rooms with artifacts from the War of 1812 to our current military conflicts. Aviation exhibits range from the 1908 Martin Glider to the modern-day F-16 Fighting Falcon, with volunteer tour guides available to tell stories about the aircraft.
MAPS Air Museum Events and Programs
The museum’s events include a diverse array of educational programming for kids and adults alike. From military knife shows and aviation campouts to food festivals held within the hangar space, the museum serves as a community hub that pays tribute to the past, present, and future of aviation. The annual MAPS Air Museum Car Show, which takes place in June, also benefits the museum. Additional programming includes a hands-on air academy for students ages 10 and up, a military history initiative that gathers veteran interviews, plus history presentations, lesson plans, and STEM instructional videos for teachers to use in classrooms.
A Destination for All Ages
Everyone is welcome at MAPS Air Museum, where you’re sure to go home with aviation knowledge and an appreciation for the art of flight with every visit. Whether you can name every plane in the hangar or you’re simply looking for an engaging place for a family outing, MAPS Air Museum is a place that all ages will enjoy. Kids and adults alike can experience the simulator flight trainers, which range from a vintage simulator created in 1929 that trained more than 500,000 U.S. pilots to a modern operational flight trainer that’s identical to the forward cockpit of the TA-4J airplane.
